Pine Island Glacier has shed another block of ice into Antarctic waters. The loss was tiny compared to the icebergs that broke off in 2014 and 2015, but the event is further evidence of the ice shelf’s fragility.

南極のパインアイランド氷河から氷山が南極海に押し出されました。この流出は2014年と2015年に崩壊した氷山に比べると小さいものでしたが、棚氷の脆弱性を示す証拠でもあります。

パインアイランド氷河は南極の内部の西南地帯にある氷床から海に氷を移動させている主な氷河の一つです。パインアイランド湾には、毎年約79立方キロメートル（19立方マイル）の氷押し出されていると伝えています。
棚氷には大小さまざまなクレバスが走っており、ちょつとした衝撃でも崩壊を起こすほどもろいものだそうです。
この写真はランドサット 8のOLI(Operational Land Imager）で2017年1月26日に撮影されたもので、約1〜2キロもの棚氷が崩落しているように見えます。
