On Jan. 16, 2016, Expedition 46 Commander Scott Kelly shared photographs of a blooming zinnia flower in the Veggie plant growth system aboard the International Space Station. Kelly wrote, “Yes, there are other life forms in space! #SpaceFlower #YearInSpace”

2016年1月16日に第46次長期滞在クルーのスコット・ケリーは国際宇宙ステーション内の野菜研究棟で開花した百日草の写真をSNSで共有しました。「ほら、宇宙空間でも生命は花開くよ!#SpaceFlower #YearInSpace」とケリーは書き込んでいます。

(訳者注)この百日草は2015年12月24日に「百日草を国際宇宙ステーションで栽培します」としてNASAのサイトに掲載されています。その時の百日草がめでたく開花したということになります。

Zinnia flowers are starting to grow in the International Space Station’s Veggie facility as part of the VEG-01 investigation.
Veggie provides lighting and nutrient supply for plants in the form of a low-cost growth chamber and planting “pillows” to provide nutrients for the root system.

百日草が、VEG-01研究の一環として、国際宇宙ステーションの野菜栽培器で育っています。
野菜栽培器を使うことで光と養分を低コストで与えることができます。根で育つ植物には「枕」に根をはらせて、そこから栄養を与えています。
